In a short-sighted society where 50% of the food is thrown away, there's nothing sinful about storing a little food for a rainy day and/or societal collapse.
This is how I do it, and it's one of the cheapest, easiest, and most portable methods.
At the very least, having a few gallons of beans and rice stashed in the garage is a good idea. Make sure to keep your food storage somewhere cool, dry, and dark. Under the stairs or in the garage is a great idea. Rodents may chew through plastic buckets so a large metal garbage can may be preferable. Five gallon buckets are much more convenient and portable, however.
