Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs are bad for a number of reasons.
1) They emit EMF that causes skin cancer, triggers headaches, migraines, stomachaches, fatigue, eye strain, anxiety, and irritability. Fluorescent lights can also negatively impact the immune system, literally making people sick.
2) CFL bulbs also create "dirty electricity" which transmits through wiring, meaning you don't even need to be in the same room as a CFL bulb to feel the negative health impacts.
3) CFL bulbs contain mercury vapors which are released when the bulb malfunctions or breaks. On top of that, it is technically illegal to throw away CFL bulbs but most towns and cities do not properly recycle CFL bulbs either.
4) Many brands of CFL bulbs have been found to be a fire hazard.
5) CFL bulbs are much less efficient and shorter-lived than LED bulbs. When you factor in materials and energy used in producing CFL bulbs, they are not even as efficient as old school incandescent light bulbs... as if there weren't already enough reasons to avoid them!
BOTTOM LINE: Avoid CFL light bulbs like the plague they are intended to be.
LED light bulbs are ideal because they use the least amount of power, last the longest, and emit the lowest levels of EMF. Though LED bulbs are more expensive initially, they last for years and won't make you sick like CFLs will.
Old school incandescent bulbs are also better than CFL bulbs. They don't last as long and use more energy, but if you can't afford LED anything but CFL is the way to go.
